O) Electric Telegraph office

Continue your walk along Norwich Quay and you will find the telegraph office on your right.

The Lyttelton Times, concerned with receiving and delivering important news between Lyttelton and Christchurch, lobbied for a telegraph line.

This resulted in the first telegraph line being opened in New Zealand in 1862 between the Port and the City of Christchurch.

From 1870 the line kept extending, including an inter-island line, and the first telegraph between New Zealand and Australia was sent in 1876.
