governors bay hotel

The Governors Bay Hotel is one of the oldest, if not one of the most beautiful hotels in New Zealand. It has been in continuous operation since its establishment in 1870. After the devastating earthquakes of September 2010 and again, on 22nd of February and June 6th 2011, the hotel has been meticulously and fully restored to its former colonial glory. Of the nine hotels in Lyttelton harbour prior to February 22nd, the Governors Bay Hotel is only one of two that have survived.

The hotel enjoys a fine reputation for its gastro-pub style fare, friendly service and extensive selection of local wines and beers. Fantastic views await you out to Quail Island and Lyttelton Harbour from the garden bar, our new deck, restaurant, verandah and the guest rooms of the Governors Bay Hotel. There are great walks to be had along the shoreline, cycling trips, world famous private gardens and many water based activities are within minutes of the Hotel.

Governors Bay Hotel is only 20 minutes by car from central Christchurch via Dyers Pass Road or 30 minutes via the Lyttelton Road Tunnel, and offers six guest rooms, all located on the first floor level of the hotel. Each room has been fully renovated in late 2011 with 32 inch flat screen televisions, queen size beds, free WIFI broadband, heaters, electric blankets and vanities.

Four of the rooms have direct access, through French doors, out onto a wide verandah with stunning views over the Lyttelton harbour. The verandah is ideal for relaxing with a drink, reading a book, or an early morning cuppa. The remaining two rooms have local and hillside views.

All of the rooms are clean, contemporary and very comfortable, however, none have bathroom or ensuite facilities. Guests use two separate shower and toilet areas. There are no cooking facilities in the rooms and guests are encouraged to utilize our dining room facilities. Due to the balcony access and stairs, the Governors Bay Hotel accommodation is not ideally suited to the disabled or for children under the age of 12.

Overnight accommodation starts from $100.00 per couple per night for our hillside queen, $120.00 per night for our balcony queens and $150 per night for our balcony king. All of room rates include a continental breakfast which can be enjoyed in the guest only breakfast room.

Due to the balcony access and stairs, the Governors Bay Hotel accommodation is not ideally suited to the disabled or for children under the age of 12. There are a number of cottages or Bed and Breakfast options also in the Harbour Bays region and we are happy to recommend these should our accommodation not suit you.

Tariffs range between NZ$100.00 and NZ$150.00.

To make a booking, please phone between 10.30am and 9.00pm any day.
